Purchasing
an IBI Curriculum and Individual IBI Programs
November
21, 2004
In
response to numerous requests, the Behaviour Institute has decided
to begin to sell its curriculum of over 1,400 intensive behaviour
intervention (IBI) programs. Behaviour Institute is a private
agency which provides IBI to children with autism in southern Ontario
through its home-based and centre-based programs. Its directors,
Dr. Joel Hundert and Dr. Nicole Walton-Allen, are psychologists,
Board Certified Behaviour Analysts and also teach at McMaster University.
Each program has been developed by one of the Directors or
by a Curriculum Coordinator under the supervision of the Directors
and have been checked for quality and consistency.
The
success of IBI requires the availability of quality instructional
programs, customized to meet the needs of individual children, and
based on principles of effective intervention. No matter
how skilled the therapist, a child is unlikely to make significant
progress unless the programs that the therapist is following are
well designed. Agencies typically face a number of significant
challenges in developing quality IBI programs.
A.
Ensuring Quality of Programs
Until
very recently, Ontario has not had many work settings providing
interventions for children with autism based on principles of applied
behaviour analysis, nor university / college courses in this approach
that would have equipped staff with skills in how to write IBI programs.
The development of IBI programs requires advanced knowledge
of applied behaviour analysis and instructional design typically
beyond the knowledge of most front-line and supervisory staff.
As a result, IBI service providers may not have a way of developing
consistent and quality programs..
B.
Efficiency
It
would be important to look at the amount of time it takes a therapist
to develop programs. This time is taken away from the provision
of direct therapy to children and also may be quite costly.
For instance, if development of one program takes between four and
six hours, depending upon the hourly rate paid to the therapist,
this translates into a $100.00 to $200.00 cost for a program which
may be only used once. Multiply this amount by the number
of programs that are developed.
C.
Response Time
Finally,
because program developers tend to be individuals who are engaged
in a number of other activities such as working directly with children,
or providing supervision, there may be slow turn around time between
the time the need for a program is identified and when the program
is able to be prepared.
Behaviour
Institute's Curriculum and Programs
A
curriculum describes a suggested sequence of instructional programs
within developmental domains. One can purchase a curriculum
list for children with autism (e.g., Individualized Goal Selection;
IGS) or use a criteria-referenced test of a child's skills (e.g.,
The Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills; ABLLS) to
guide the sequence of what to teach a child. However, both
curriculum lists and criterion-referenced tests suggest what skills
to teach in what order, but typically do not show the programs themselves.
At BI, we have over 1,400 programs written in a set format, and
organized into developmental domains (e.g., receptive language,
readiness skills). The precise sequence of skills to teach any one
child should be individualized, based a consideration of such factors
as gaps in past learning, key goals and the learning style of the
particular child.
