New, Free ABA Service Offered By Behaviour Institute
Behaviour Institute has been approved to provide ABA services to children with ASD living in Toronto with funds provided by Toronto Autism ABA services. The services consist of a number of groups on such topics as:

- Increasing beginning communication
- Teaching conversational skills
- Teaching how to play with peers
- Getting your child to listen to you and reduce problem behaviours
- Toilet-training your child
- Teaching self-regulation
The groups are composed of 3 to 8 children and each three-hour session is held each week for 10 weeks. Parents are involved to learn how to apply similar strategies at home.
The particular groups that will be offered and their locations in Toronto will depend on parent interest.
Children must be diagnosed with ASD, live in Toronto, and not not already have registered with Toronto Autism ABA Services.

New "Volunteer" Program
To Help Families Who Are Waiting For Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI)
Bursary of Hope For Autism Donates Service For One Family
There is a sizeable body of research evidence that the intensive form of applied behaviour analysis (intensive behavioural intervention, IBI) can be effective in improving the developmental trajectory of young children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), if delivered by trained and supervised staff. Unfortunately, the wait for publically-funded IBI tends to be years.
Recently, we have developed an intervention for families who are waiting for IBI or for children discharged from IBI, but continue to need help. We have called it the Volunteer Program because it is staffed by university or college students who are trained and supervised to implement ABA programs for a child with ASD under the direction one of Behaviour Institute’s Board Certified Behaviour Analysts.
For a description of the program and to apply by December 20, 2011 for the free service for one family click here.

APPRENTICESHIP
Apprenticeship in Intensive Behavioural Intervention For Children with Autism
From the
Behaviour Institute
In response to a high volume of requests, Behaviour Institute (BI) will be offering an apprenticeship program for individuals who have completed or are within 6 months of completing an undergraduate degree in the social sciences (preferably psychology, or equivalent) and are looking for experience in implementing Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) with children with autism.
The six-month apprenticeship will be held at BI’s centre-based program, “Children’s College”, located at 618 The Queensway, Toronto. Successful candidates may chose between completing an apprenticeship full-time over 6 months. Apprenticeships may start in September or May of the year.
For the first four months of a full-time program, candidates will not be paid. Each successful candidate will be assigned to a BI staff mentor who will provide individual instruction to candidates on how to understand and implement IBI programs. For the first week, candidates will simply observe their mentor implementing programs. Candidates gradually and systematically take over the implementation of children’s programs as they receive coaching and feedback. Once a week, candidates will be given didactic instruction in principles of applied behaviour analysis and techniques of implementing intervention procedures.
Candidates will need to demonstrate their mastery of techniques and concepts through their measured skills in implementing programs and passing paper and pencil quizzes. If successful after four months, candidates will be paid for the work that they do at an BI staff rate. At this point, candidates will continue to receive supervision and weekly didactic instruction.
Successful candidates will receive a certificate of completing the Apprenticeship program.
