Apprenticeship in Intensive Behavioural Intervention For Children with Autism
From the
Behaviour Institute
In response to a high volume of requests, Behaviour Institute (BI) will be offering an apprenticeship program for individuals who have completed or are within 6 months of completing an undergraduate degree in the social sciences (preferably psychology, or equivalent) and are looking for experience in implementing Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI) with children with autism.
The six-month apprenticeship will be held at BI’s centre-based program, “Children’s College”, located at 618 The Queensway, Toronto. Successful candidates may chose between completing an apprenticeship full-time over 6 months. Apprenticeships may start in September or May of the year.
For the first four months of a full-time program, candidates will not be paid. Each successful candidate will be assigned to a BI staff mentor who will provide individual instruction to candidates on how to understand and implement IBI programs. For the first week, candidates will simply observe their mentor implementing programs. Candidates gradually and systematically take over the implementation of children’s programs as they receive coaching and feedback. Once a week, candidates will be given didactic instruction in principles of applied behaviour analysis and techniques of implementing intervention procedures.
Candidates will need to demonstrate their mastery of techniques and concepts through their measured skills in implementing programs and passing paper and pencil quizzes. If successful after four months, candidates will be paid for the work that they do at an BI staff rate. At this point, candidates will continue to receive supervision and weekly didactic instruction.
Successful candidates will receive a certificate of completing the Apprenticeship program.
